Tiede by Night.

I’d been looking forward to doing this trip for months before I went on holiday to Tenerife and when we booked with Travel Tenerife I almost popped with excitement!

The tour company drew us in because they had small groups with 3 telescopes, some other tours were huge coaches full to bursting with one guide and one telescope! Crazy!
I think there was about 20 people on our tour, and the guides spoke lots of different languages between them so we split off into language groups for the talks.

The first stop was to watch the sunset, which was beautiful! Champagne was served and we all chilled out in a stunning location to appreciate the beauty of the Island. We also had the chance to see the sun through a telescope which was amazing!

After this we were off to the star gazing location, it was amazing to see as it got darker the stars starting to shine. Unfortunately the moon was nearly full so we didn't see as much as we could have, but that just means I’ll have to come again! Even with the moon so bright I’d never seen so many stars before.
The telescopes were set up and we had talks about each of the stars, constellations and planets we could see, and then we could have a look at them through the telescopes. We got to see Saturn’s rings, 2 stripes and 4 moons of Jupiter, numerous constellations including Scorpio and Gemini, I learnt that you can find the North star for navigation by lining it up with the Big Dipper! Not sure I’d ever be lost somewhere to need it but I know now just incase!
The most beautiful things I saw that night were the Globular and Butterfly clusters. I’ve seen them on tv but to see them with your own eyes is just amazing.

The guides were brilliant, very knowledgable and extremely passionate about the stars and space and were lovely friendly guys.

I had intended to try my hand at some night photography for the first time on this trip and one of the guides came over to lend a hand with setting up, thank you for that :)
My shots aren't great but I'm happy with them being my first attempt! I can only get better right?!

This tour has been an experience I’ll never forget, and will be one I do again for sure. If anyone reading this is heading to Tenerife on holiday, please look up Travel Tenerife and get yourself on one of their tours, you wont regret it. I will 100% be booking with them again when I come back to tenerife.

Mt Tiede & Masca Jeep Safari.

No holiday to beautiful Tenerife is complete without a trip to Mt Tiede national park with Tamarán on their jeep safari.
We chose the full day trip which included of course the National Park of Mt Tiede, finishing up in the village of Masca with the route taking you through typical Spanish villages and includes a stop in Vilaflor, the highest village in Spain.

After all the pick ups had been made we met the convoy of other jeeps at a meeting point and was split into language groups, where we met our driver for the day, Colin!

From there we made our way through lovely little villages, stopping at different places for pictures and little talks about the area.

What I loved about this tour was that you weren't bombarded with information and missed out on the trip itself because you were trying to listen to the information. We got given a brief snippet of info about the area, the volcano and national park, the village of Masca and its history and little facts about Tenerife itself. If you wanted to know more then the guides were happy to answer more questions you had, or you could go exploring yourself and have time for more pictures!

I’ve been to tenerife 3 times now, and each time I've been on a jeep safari to the National Park of Mt Tiede, but this one was the most enjoyable by far. The guides/drivers were really happy guys, very knowledgeable about the area and made the trip fun. I never get bored of the landscapes in Tenerife and I already want to come back!

Mt Tiede is the worlds 3rd largest ocean island volcano and the highest peak in spain at 3718m. The volcano is still active and the last eruption was in 1909. The volcano itself actually sits inside the crater of a much older and bigger volcano which collapsed to form Las Cañadas caldera. The landscapes and formations in the national park are surreal and breathtaking and if you visit Tenerife, do not leave without seeing them!

After here we stopped off for lunch and then headed into Masca. On a side note here, big thanks to Colin who translated my allergies for me at the restaurant! Usually on trips like this I don't eat because its just easier that way but thanks to Colin I had some lunch!
The road into Masca was a very windy road with hairpin turns and stunning views! I’d love to drive this road one day! It was a lot of fun on this road with a lot of laughs at the tourists who were failing miserably at negotiating the tight turns and small roads! Losers! Haha!

Masca is rumoured to be a pirate smuggling village, as you cant see it from the sea, it seemed the perfect place for pirates to hide stolen ships in the caves and keep the loot hidden in the village! Whatever its past its a tiny village and I loved everything about it. While reading about it for this post I read that you can walk from the village to the bay on the coast and I’m now so excited about this it is now on my list of things to do next time I come to Tenerife!

I really do recommend Tamarán if you decide (why wouldn't you!) to explore the island. They do lots of different trips and have a vip option too if a jeep isn't your thing! Honestly I wouldn't do it any other way than a jeep but each to their own! The full day trip was really reasonably priced and I will definitely use them again.

Thank you Tamarán for an unforgettable day!

See you soon for more trips and memories!

Travelling with food allergies.

With the holiday season well and truly underway, and having just come back from a week in Tenerife, I thought I’d chat about traveling with food allergies and epipens!

So firstly I have allergies to nuts and peanuts and carry two epipens at all times. I found out about my allergies 6 years ago and feel fairly confident now about living with my allergies.

Most airlines and holiday companies are now well aware of allergies and have procedures in place to look after an allergy passenger, but its always worth an email to the company before booking if you like to find out their allergy policy, or after booking so they have your allergy on your booking.
With regards to flying the general response I've had from every airline is to let the cabin crew know when boarding that you have a nut/peanut allergy and they will then make an announcement to let everyone on board know they will not be serving nut products and ask passengers not to consume their own nut products brought on board. I recently flew with Monarch and was very impressed with their service.

Most airlines and airports state you should have a doctors letter and recent prescription showing you need to carry epipens, I have these things but I've never once had to show anyone. I always think its best to have them and not need them than one day randomly be asked for this and not have it. Plus an up to date prescription will come in real handy if you need to replace epipens abroad, lose or run out of any other medication and need to get some more or just in a general emergency when hospital staff need to know what medication you're on. I was also told to let airport security know I had epipens but had mixed experiences at two different airports, at East Midlands they wanted them out of the case, in their own tray going through the scanner and I had to have my bag and belongings searched and drug and explosive swabbed, in Birmingham they didn't give two hoots and I just left them in my bag. Not sure why they were so different! Maybe I looked a bit shifty in East Midlands airport!!
I know a lot of allergy people go self catering and cook themselves, if you choose this option it might be wise to keep with you a list of your allergens in the language of the country you're visiting when out food shopping. Some people take a bit of food with them too.
Apart from my recent holiday I've always gone self catering and eaten out. Since my allergy was diagnosed I've only ever been to the Greek Islands and can’t remember having any issues eating out, even before the new EU regulations for providing allergy information. Its always a good idea to have translation cards which you can get from allergy uk.
This holiday was my first half board holiday, not gunna lie I was a little nervous about eating in one place! What if they sucked with allergies? What if there was nothing safe? But I needn't have worried. Every dish was colour coded to match what allergens were present and the chef came out every night to go through the dishes with me. Amazing service! I ate out a few times at lunch and all the menus I saw had pictures next to each dish with which allergen they contained. I also found it really easy communicating that I had a nut allergy. I think the change in the law has really made it easier to eat out abroad. I have no fears or worries about eating out at all now abroad.

Make sure you memorise the number for the emergency services for whatever country you're visiting. Also where I stayed turned out to be only a few minutes from the hospital so in my welcome pack was a card stating it may actually be quicker to get treatment going by taxi than waiting for ambulance (obviously if you can move safely and aren't immediately dying!) and it translated medical emergency please take me to hospital into Spanish to give to a taxi driver. I’d never seen this before and while you immediately think why the heck would you get a taxi instead of waiting for an ambulance, well there were taxis literally everywhere, so to jump in one and get to hospital would be quicker than to stay and wait for help to get to you.
Keep your phone close, incase you need to call the emergency services. I got myself a waterproof case for mine as I knew I’d be in the sea alone and in a kayak in the sea so I invested in a waterproof case, but luckily only used it for filming and photos! I also got a waterproof bumbag to keep my epipens and other medication dry and safe when in the sea, I never used it as I wasn't doing as much water stuff as I’d planned but I will definitely keep them and use them another time. I had planned to use it at a water park and kayaking in the sea and some snorkelling, sadly these never happened this time but I will be doing them at some point!

Another little thing I find handy to have, not just on holiday but all the time, is a little medical id type card which states my allergies, medication, other medical conditions and past surgeries and emergency contact info. You can also have this info on your phone so emergency services can access it from the lock screen. On the iPhone this is in the health app and entering you're information in the medical id section. Super handy! I got chatting once to a paramedic who said they're trained to check this immediately when attending someone alone and unable to speak so its worth sorting out.

So thats a bit of a summary of how I travel with my allergies. I’m sure I've forgotten things and other people will have their own cool ideas, especially with things like water sports and skiing and things so I’d love for this to be a start of sharing our travel tips! So if you have any tips of your own please comment and let us all know how you travel with you're allergies!

18 Month update after spine surgery.

I'm laying by the pool in sunny tenerife and it suddenly occurred to me that right now it's been 18 months since I had surgery on my spine! So obviously the rightful thing to do is a nice little update about how I'm doing!

If you haven't read my post about the surgery I had you can read it here but long story short I had a severely herniated disc in my lower spine and had surgery to remove the herniated bit.

So the biggest difference is pain. The crippling pain is no more! I occasionally get a little back pain and the odd niggling bit of nerve pain in my bum cheeks but it is a tiny fraction of what I used to suffer with and it doesn't affect anything I do in my life.

My mood and attitude to life has changed since my op, I'm now more happy, optimistic and full of enthusiasm for making up for the years I missed out on. I couldn't have gone on holiday with my back the way it was for so many reasons, now I'm on holiday for the 4th time since surgery! I've been doing so much more, seeing shows, day trips, just general hanging out with friends and family. I'm also becoming more adventurous, like I have a few things I'd love to do that I would never dreamed of before the op! I've had and got so much to look forward to and none of it would have possible without this surgery.

I have been doing Pilates at least once a week since January and it has done wonders for not only my back but my general health. I have an issue with "medically unexplained pain" in my right arm and only today I noticed I was able to lift myself out of the pool, I've never been able to do that before! Such a weakling I was! When I don't do Pilates for a week or two my back starts to ache a little so I know it is helping to keep me strong and pain free. I've also lost a stone in weight!

I will always have keeping my back safe in mind when doing things like lifting heavy objects, sports and things like theme parks and if I don't feel safe doing something I will either find something else to do or find a way to protect my back. Pilates is helping because building up a strong core is key to maintaining a healthy spine.

I feel like my old self again, happy and full of life and I love it!

Kevin & Karen Dance Tour Leicester.

So last night I went to see Kevin and Karen Clifton in Leicester on their very first Dance Tour!

I dragged along Ellis, who has never watched Strictly or followed anything dancy ever, with the intent on getting her hooked so I have a gossip buddy when Strictly comes back! Muhahaha!
We both LOVED it! I didn’t know what to expect, obviously there would be dancing and music but I had no idea it would be narrated by the pair too. The show was letting us in to the story of how they found dance, came together and became the most adorable couple!
Kevin and Karen have always been my favourite people on Strictly, I love their personalities and zest for life is endearing! I also think Kevin is hugely creative and his routines on Strictly always wow me! But on stage you got to see vulnerability, drama, passion, love, my emotions were all over the place! People around us were gasping, tearing up, laughing out loud and couldn't take their eyes off the stage!
They had a team of 6 dancers with them, one of them I didn't know was there, Gorka Marquez, one of the beautiful men from Strictly!
The overall production was amazing, the natural humour Kevin and Karen have was oozing from the stage, I loved that they got the audience involved and had people on stage learning a routine, the band and singers were incredible and it is a night I will never forget.
In the interval Ellis tweeted how great the show was, Kevin liked it and we both literally had a teenage fan girl moment!! I think at one point Ellis’s beautifully painted nails ended up in my arm!!
We both had such a great night and I’m so glad I got to share it with you Ellis!!
Well done to everyone involved with the tour and if you can still get tickets, get them!

An amazing night, beautiful dancing, fantastic music, humour and passion from two of the most stunning, creative and humble people I’ve had the pleasure of seeing.
